University Hospital Gasthuisberg is the largest hospital of the academic hospitals associated with the Catholic University of Leuven. It is located on the outskirts of town, just 4 km from the railway station (with bus services every 10 minutes). Since it has been built on sloping terrain, the complex is easily visible from a distance. The hospital consists of various low-rise buildings, and an astoundingly large (and never large enough) parking lot. Even patients of the hospital have to pay for their parking lot. Not exactly an architectural achievement, but medical services here undoubtedly are among the best in Belgium (and the world for that matter).
UZ Leuven has five campuses : campus Gasthuisberg, campus Lubbeek, campus Pellenberg, campus Sint-Pieter en campus Sint-Rafaël. Together they haven close to 1,900 beds, making UZ Leuven the largest hospital in Belgium.
